Bestowal dialogue

'Hello there! You are <name>, are you not? The hillmen spoke of you, which is how I came upon your name. I recognized you by your gear; it is not that of a the bleak North-men to be sure.

'My name is Declan. I am a minstrel by trade, though I daresay my family wishes it weren't so. I arrived in Aughaire by chance, or fate, of perhaps random luck! I daresay I don't wish to ponder the long roads that lead me in search of my family's history.

'My grandfather was a famous explorer, Durell... perhaps you've heard of him? He launched an expedition in search of ancient relics of the north. Though we received one cryptic letter about some of his findings, Durell never returned.

'So here I stand, quill in hand. While safe at home, I dreamed of uncovering grandfather's secrets and writing them into a fitting tale, but I fear, having looked myself upon these hills, I have not the will to seek out the barrow his letter speaks of. He tells of something called the Halls of Night... will you seek it for me?'

Background

A bard, Declan has asked that you investigate the Halls of Night and return with any clues as to the disappearance of his grandfather.

Objective 1

  • Discover what became of Durell

The Halls of Night may be found in the hills to the east of Aughaire, beyond the northern gate.

Discover what became of Durell in the Halls of Night.

Declan: 'He must be within the Halls of Night. I am sure of it.'
Shadow says, "Ah, there you are. Hurry along, I've been expecting you."
Shadow says, "So, these are the brave adventurers? I must admit, you look tougher than most."
Shadow says, "I'm sure you have questions... all in due time. First, a test."
Shadow says, "Excellent! I've not seen such determination in years."
Shadow says, "My name is... well, you may call me Shadow. And these, are the Halls of Night."
Shadow says, "We mustn't tarry. We wouldn't want to make Nightmare angry."
Shadow says, "Who is Nightmare? He is... this. Everything you see around you is his creation."
Shadow says, "Impressive! I will inform Nightmare of your arrival."
Shadow says, "The dreamers have passed your test."
Nightmare says, "Trespassers... how dare you enter my realm unbidden! And for what purpose?"
Nightmare says, "Mischievous desecration? Thieves I'll warrant! Robbers and grave-thieves!"
Nightmare says, "Well, we don't have to worry about that any longer, now do we?"
Nightmare says, "I am a most hospitable host, am I not Shadow?"
Nightmare says, "Make yourselves at home. Shadow will show you about."
Nightmare says, "If you require anything, feel free not to ask."
Shadow says, "Do not heed his words. His 'gift' is unending torment and suffering."
Shadow says, "You may have the strength to oppose him. I will open the way for you."
Nightmare says, "Impressive! You may become a useful servant after all."
Shadow says, "You have roused his anger, I have never seen him in such a mood."
Shadow says, "Be wary! He is more powerful than he appears."
Nightmare says, "You dare enter my domain and challenge me?"
Nightmare says, "I see you do not comprehend what fate awaits you."
Nightmare says, "Let us see how you fare against a true nightmare!"
Nightmare says, "Your spirit is mine <name>!"
Shadow says, "I - I hardly believe it... you've done it."
Shadow says, "Everyone, come quickly!"
Shadow says, "These adventurers have accomplished what none before dared."
Shadow says, "Challenging Nightmare in his own realm and emerging the victor..."
Shadow says, "The Night is over! They have set us free!"
Shadow says, "Farewell! Go now and find rest with your families long sundered. I will join you shortly."
Shadow: 'Durell? Yes... that was my name once, though I fear I cannot recall how long it has been since I last heard it...
'We discovered the tomb quite by accident. A terrible storm forced us to take shelter in what we thought to be a shallow cavern. When the squall passed, we discovered the entrance of the barrow. I sent my apprentice back with a letter noting our findings.
'It is a comfort to know that my family has never forgotten me.'
Shadow: 'Let my family know I have found peace.'

Objective 2

  • Return to Declan with news of his grandfather.

You have discovered that Shadow is the grandfather of Declan, his spirit trapped for centuries in the Halls of Night.

Declan: 'What you describe is... difficult to take in.
'As a child I always expected one day to discover grandfather had returned with a cart of gold and jewels parked in the stable. As I grew older I became filled with other feelings; anger, sadness, regret.
'To hear that you have spoken with him... I... I am not even sure how I now feel. You have my sincerest thanks for all that you have done.'
